Abstract

The article examines the issues of transformation of historical industrial heritage monuments. The previous functional content is replaced by a new characteristic of modern social development. In many cases, the transformation of such objects is in line with the classical triad of socio-innovative development (technology - information - social engineering). Primarily in historical buildings are located:

  • comfortable working areas for virtual research;
  • informational and cultural-educational objects;
  • creative and socio-recreational spaces.

Museums are often created in a historical monuments. A common case was the museumification of technological processes and equipment of the industrial past.

The listed areas of transformation for the most part do not imply an aggressive introduction of technological innovations and therefore, to the greatest extent allow preserving historical objects in their original form.

Using examples from world practice, architectural techniques of the innovative transformation of historical industrial objects are considered - from the preservation and restoration of all architectural and structural solutions with local integration of elements that are only necessary according to modern standards - to a variety of options for completion and construction with partial preservation of historical elements and details.

Many of the transformed objects become multifunctional platforms, in some cases exceeding the specified function and rising to the level of a new type of city-wide creative social spaces.

The problem of correlation between the old and the new is solved both by preserving the historical monument as much as possible or by imitating its stylistic characteristics and by creating contrasting relations. Between these positions lies the entire palette of architectural transformation techniques. The value of historical objects of architecture only increases with time, being the key to the sustainability of social development, but the process of transformation aimed at a specific function can be repeated several times. That is why the compromise between functional transformation and the historical monument should be decided in favor of the latter.
