Abstract

The article focuses on the questions of maintaining the aesthetical value of historical towns during the reconstructive intervention into their urban fabric. The problem examination will be based on the material of small Western European towns whose heritage has been marked by innovative transformations in the recent decades.
The article will address local reconstructive works that have impacted the image of significant objects and architectural complexes of the historical town. The analyzed architectural innovations differ in their artistic direction, in the scale off
the intervention into the monument’s structure and most importantly in their influence on the existing image of the historically valuable heritage. Among the addressed sites there are conserved and adapted ruined monuments, transformed sites of the historical town center, convent buildings given a new function.
