The article is devoted to the existence of the concept of "ensemble" in Russian architectural thought of the 19th –20th centuries, its gradual clarification and use, both in works on the history of architecture and in current practice. The author draws attention to the fact that interest in ensembles has a bright national connotation in our culture. The collective monograph "Architectural Ensembles of Moscow of the 15th – early 20th centuries: Principles of Artistic Unity (Moscow, 1997), published under the editorship of T.F. Savarenskaya, is characterized as the last burst of professional interest in the "ensemble" as a basic category in Russian architecture.
