Prospects for the Construction and Development of the Architecture of Multi-Storey Timber Civil Buildings

Abstract

his article discusses the factors influencing the feasibility of multi-story timber construction in Russia. Based on an analysis of international experience, potential trends in the development of architecture for multi-story timber civilian buildings are identified. Obstacles and drawbacks in the establishment of this architectural and construction direction are identified. On the one hand the relevance of constructing multi-story timber civilian buildings is justified by state support, rich traditions of wooden architecture and the neсessity to utilize products from the timber industry on the domestic market, as well as the ecological, hygienic, economic, and architectural advantages. On the other hand skepticism and concerns regarding the use of wood in residential and public buildings with five or more stories cannot be ignored. The aim of this article is to raise the question of the relevance, feasibility, and prospects of wood application in modern civil construction in Russia.
