Abstract

The article is presented in two parts. The first part reveals the determining role of the image of the capital city in the context of the formation of state and national identity, identifies and examines the features and patterns of the formation of the architectural and spatial environment of cities that received the status of capital (new capitals) in the period from the beginning of the 19th century to the present day. Examples of characteristic models of the capital's volumetric-spatial structure that were formed at the stage of the New Age during the formation of industrial society are given using the examples of Washington, Canberra, and Delhi.
