The article examines the possibilities of non-contradictory coexistence and development of urban spaces of different nature using Nizhny Novgorod as an example. The following fragments of the city are analyzed: the 1920s public construction quarter “Krasny Prosveshchenets”, modern development in the area of Oktyabrskaya Square. Based on the research and the involvement of the works of various authors, the article traces the nature of the interaction of a part and an urban whole in comparison of real examples with theoretical research in the field of philosophy, urban studies, socially oriented environmental theories, which made it possible to determine relevant enlarged spheres of mutual influences: meanings, forms and functions of the planning structure, the poetics of urban space and spatial phenomenology.
