Preservation of Cultural and Technological Ensembles of Russia on the Example of the Oldest Tram Line of St. Petersburg

Abstract

The approach to the preservation of historic and historical-cultural environments is improving towards holistic preservation with the identification of nonmaterial cultural value characteristics.
The single discipline view of the problem is becoming less relevant as there is a growing need to look at issues from different
angles in order to find the best solution for our society. In the context of environmental approach to the study and preservation it is more appropriate to use interdisciplinary interaction, involving different experts.
This research is devoted to the study of the concept of cultural and technological ensembles applied to the streetcar
transportation infrastructure as a possible object of cultural heritage.
The paper focuses on the identification of culture-technological ensembles in Russian cities with a proposal to restore part
of the lost areas of the first tram line on Vasilievsky Island in the city of St. Petersburg.
The result of the analysis of the possible impact of the new tarmway line on the existing transport infrastructure of
Vasileostrovsky district is presented, conducted with the help of interdisciplinary interaction between specialists in the field of
cultural heritage preservation and specialists in planning of urban transport systems.
