Architectural and Typological Potential of Arched Courtyard Spaces (Based on the Example of Russian Cities)

Abstract

The article introduces the concept of "arched courtyard space". The article examines courtyards in the historical centers of Russian cities filled with public functions. The analysis of the architectural and typological potential of arched courtyard spaces is structured in accordance with the components of the concept: urban planning, functional planning, constructive and compositional-artistic potential are consistently identified. The same structure is preserved in the conclusions of the article. To confirm the theoretical premises, examples of arched courtyard spaces in Nizhny Novgorod, St. Petersburg are used. Classifications of types of arched courtyard spaces are proposed. The article is accompanied by the author's photos.
