Decorative Grilles and Fences of the Soviet Period: History, Specifics and Conservation Challenges (a Case Study of Yaroslavl)

Abstract

This article is dedicated to a little-studied component of the architectural environment – decorative grilles and fences from the Soviet period, exemplified by the city of Yaroslavl. The Soviet era represented a time when the city was built, developed, and comprehensively planned not only in terms of general directions for development, regulation, and new construction but also in terms of landscaping and artistic design, starting with the monumental propaganda plan of 1918.
It reveals the specifics of the formation and evolution of decorative solutions for fences and other elements of decorative and monumental art in urban development and land organization, set against the backdrop of changing stylistic directions in architecture and the overall development of the city.
