Abstract

The article deals with the process of conversion of the newest architecture of Nizhny Novgorod to the traditions of medieval national architecture. At the same time, the influence of the Russian style of the 19th century on a variety of eclecticism – stylization, on the emergence of a national branch of modernity and retrospectivism of the early 20th centuries is traced. At the end of the 20th century in Nizhny Novgorod, architects working in postmodernism turned to neotraditionalism and contextualism when designing an ancient Russian city in the historical environment. Neo-Russian style motifs clearly manifested themselves in the architecture of unique public and religious buildings of the late 20th century, where the authors tried to create images of original regional buildings that evoke associations with the local architectural heritage of the early 20th century, developing the traditions of Russian architectural romanticism. Rethinking the traditional details and compositional principles
of building architectural forms in combination with modernity, allowed Nizhny Novgorod architects to achieve associative
links with the historical context. The review carried out in the article makes it possible to see that over the course of different
historical periods, the national style does not disappear, but periodically asserts itself and at the same time it evolves, being
influenced by a particular era.
