The article considers one of the key city-forming complexes of Tver - the ensemble of the St Catherine Monastery, created at the end of the 20th century on the basis of the parish church,Located at the confluence of the Tvertsa and Volga rivers. The history of this territory can be traced back to the Middle Ages, then its heyday is recorded at the end of the 18 - early 19th century, the reasons for stagnation in the second half of the 19 - early 20th century and the Loss of a significant number of structures of the cape complex during the Great Patriotic War are mentioned. Special attention is paid to the role of this place in the creation of a pier in the area of the Church of St. Catherine the Great Martyr in the Middle Ages, due to the conven-ient berth and, as a consequence, the presence here of a considerable number of pilots for guiding ships along the Tvertsa river to the Vyshny Volochok, and then to St. Petersburg under construction. Hence - not only the concentration of trade and craft functions, the numerical growth of representatives of these professions, but also the priority in the construction of this node with stone houses after the cardinal reform of the Castle by the architects of Catherine's time on the basis of new, "regular" urban planning principles. The article offered to the reader is only the first part of alarge work devoted to the cape ensemble of Zatverechye.
