Abstract

The object of the study is the Ascension Church of 1654 in the village of Piyala - a unique monument of wooden architecture belonging to a rare architectural type and characterized by the highest height among Russian wooden churches. The relevance of the work is determined by the lack of knowledge of the history and architecture of the object, the uncovered understanding of the place of the object in the typological picture of Russian wooden architecture, the insufficient certainty of its significance as an object of cultural heritage. The subject of the study is the typological features of the Ascension Church in a series of wooden baptismal temples, the construction stages of the object, its historical and cultural value. For the first time, the object receives a fairly complete comprehensive study, including the study of archival sources, an analysis of architecture in the context of the typology and history of Russian wooden architecture. The article also analyzes all the previously carried out works on the preservation of the object, summarizes their results for today. The theoretical significance of the article lies in expanding knowledge on the history and typology of Russian wooden architecture, and fully introducing one of the best monuments of wooden architecture into scientific circulation. The practical significance of the article lies in the fact that it formulates the main restoration problems that have developed comprehensively as a result of past work, which have to be resolved in the restoration project currently being developed.
