Heritage Site: Miusskaya Square – The Square of Enlightenment, Education, and Science

Abstract

Miusskaya Square in Moscow, with its valuable architectural, urban planning, and sociocultural heritage of the Art Nouveau period (late 19th–early 20th century), as a case study, the article identifies a set of tasks required to address theintegrated regeneration and development of such areas.
The case of Miusskaya Square made it possible to comprehensively examine the preservation and safeguarding of tangible and intangible architectural and urban planning heritage, as well as the comprehensive scope of the sociocultural assessment of its value. It is shown that the conventional methodology of urban planning regulation in densely built-up large cities and metropolitan areas can be most effective when integrated cultural heritage properties classified as heritage sites are established within historic urban areas. Such heritage sites may include individual monuments and architectural ensembles, as well as important protected attributes such as traditions and spiritual and moral values.
