V Congress of the International Union of Architects in Moscow (1958): Soviet Urban Planning in an International Context

Abstract

The article covers the holding of the V Congress of the International Union of Architects in Moscow in 1958. The text provides a general overview of the work of the Congress, but focuses on the presentation of Soviet urban planning in the reports, exhibition displays and publications of the Congress. The article argues that all the topics presented in the reports were indeed the main subject of discussion in the professional community in the mid-1950s. On the other hand, it shows how the topics that demonstrated the progressive nature of Soviet urban planning were emphasized and the contradictions between theory and
practice were smoothed out. The article concludes that the Congress not only served to strengthen the international contacts of
Soviet architecture, but also became an incentive for the transition of Soviet urban planning from experiments to the widespread
practical implementation of progressive methods.
