Typology of Youth Social Housing Europe and Asia in the XX–XXI Centuries

Abstract

This article examines the typology of international youth social housing. Contemporary challenges related to urbanization, population growth, and changing socioeconomic conditions require new approaches to organizing the living environment. In response to these challenges, alternative housing forms are emerging that not only provide comfortable living but also foster community building, support social integration, and promote sustainable development. Furthermore, mixed-income residential complexes, community-based housing complexes (CBCs) for youth social housing, and apartment-based housing represent important tools for providing affordable housing and creating an inclusive urban environment. This article examines not only specialized facilities for youth but also those where young people are integrated with other age groups.
Based on an analysis of international experience, three types of youth social housing were identified that contribute not only to the provision of affordable housing but also to the creation of a community of residents. The typology of housing for young people covers various aspects, including the organization of urban space, functional features, volumetric-spatial structure and layout of premises, forms of ownership and provision, as well as the status and degree of community living.
