Architectural Education XXI: Traditions and Innovations

Abstract

The history of architectural education in Russia has deep roots and remarkable traditions. Russian architects have always been distinguished by their knowledge of architectural history, ability to think unconventionally, and their skill in expressing their creative ideas in the pursuit of architectural form. The traditional foundations of architectural education primarily include a focus on creative practice, the experience and expertise of the teacher, the unity of upbringing and learning, The established role of theoretical knowledge, consideration of natural conditions, artistic and historical-cultural preparation, and the balance between artistic and technical disciplines, with architectural design prevailing. The diversity of challenges in the 21st century calls for a redefinition of the "practice–science–education" system. The existing educational model naturally and spontaneously transforms in response to the demands of new processes and the influence of emerging factors, taking into account available resources. The current situation requires a redistribution of focus towards the solidification of the initial phase of education, with parallel development of artistic and graphic skills and subsequent acquisition of knowledge, abilities, and competencies through case-based learning and real project problem-solving.
