Modernism in the Architecture of the Cities of Southern Russia in 1955-1991

Abstract

The article shows the reflection of the basic principles and formal techniques of world and Soviet modernism in the architecture of cities of the South of Russia in 1955—1991, the ways of their dissemination, credible sources, prototypes from foreign and national practice. Stereotypical planning and artistic solutions are shown on the example of Soviet modernism objects in the cities of Rostov-on-Don, Sochi, Krasnodar, Vladikavkaz. The frequent repetition of decorative design techniques of buildings contributed to their recognition, gave them an additional meaning associated with the image of modernity. Based on the analysis of thelocal socio-economic situation and cultural and historical features, the reasons for the popularity in the architecture of the region of some design approaches, methods of artistic understanding of spatial planning and constructive solutions and formal techniques of modernism are revealed. The study of this aspect of regional architecture has become possible due to documents newly identified in the funds of the State Archive of the Rostov Region and the State Archive of the Krasnodar Territory, materials from the archive of the Rostov branch of the Union of Architects of Russia, as well as analysis of poorly studied publications in the regional periodicals of the second half of the 1950s-1980s
