The Urban Planning Legacy of Leblond's Petersburg Plan for Russian Urban Planning

Abstract

The article shows the influence of the ideas and planning compositionslaid down by J.-B. Leblond in the draft plan of St. Petersburg. Leblond created the first regular plan for an "ideal" city, showing the possibilities of regular urban planning. For the first time in Russia, he developed a city based on a single modular planning system, which, nevertheless, made it possible to create a variety of urban planning compositions. They are based on the principle of combining simple planning modules into more complex ones.

In the plan of St. Petersburg, as in the plan of Strelninsky Park, Leblond used similar planning techniques, showing the unity of the principles of regularity for urban planning objects of various planninglevels. Leblond's planning ideas were used throughout the 18th and 19th centuries. when developing projects for "ideal" cities in Russia. The shape of the plan of St. Petersburg is an oval, repeated in the plan of Orenburg, thelayout of the city of Semenovliterally repeats the central planning element of Vasilyevsky Island, built on a diagonal layout that was not previously used in the plans of Russian cities. The principles of building a regular composition of Petrovsky Islandlater served as the basis for many city plans. The result of Leblond's work in Russia was not only a general increase in urban planning culture, but also a direct borrowing of the planning solutions proposed by him, which became his urban heritage.
