Neoclassical Architecture in the Context of Moscow in the 1990s – 2000s

Abstract

The article considers neoclassical architecture as one of the directions of evolution of the Russian architectural thought evolution in the late XX – early XXI centuries. Russian architects followed the path of neoclassical architecture development, keeping the balance of innovation and tradition avoiding forgeries, compilations and the use of direct citations. Neoclassical architects were able to build a proper dialogue with the viewer, suggesting seriousness and intellectuality without any irony or jokes. Neoclassical architectural plasticity has shown great flexibility and has been able not only to assert the inviolability of traditions, pointing to the past, but also to speak the actual language, embedding into the present. Despite the fact that neoclassical architects worked in the same direction and were guided of the classical principles of space organization, their conceptual ideas, reflections and creative projects showed a
completely different understanding of the classical. That is why this direction is interesting, characterized by a clearly articulated position and a bright individual style.
