Curvilinear Forms in Architecture of Buildings and Structures up to the XXI Century

Abstract

To date, the architectural styles have been systematized with their subspecies and style trends in relation to thin shells and shell structures. There are several chronologies of the development of architectural styles. In this article, the stages of the appearance of curvilinear structures in the form of surfaces of different classes are proposed for consideration.
It is shown that the first thin shells and shell structures had the shape of spherical, cylindrical surfaces and some of the simplest surfaces of rotation. Till the end of the 20th century, 24 analytical surfaces have been used out of more than six hundred known surfaces. It is shown that 5 periods in the development of the architecture of curved forms coincide in time with 5 periods of design and construction of thin shells and shell structures. The authors only states the real situation in the architecture of curved forms of the 20th century and show the increasing interest of architects and builders in such objects at the end of 20th century.
