The "Pre-Sverdlovsk" Period in the Creative Activity of the Architect-Artist S.V. Dombrovsky

Abstract

The article is devoted to the little-studied "pre-Sverdlovsk" period of design and teaching activity of the architect-artist S.V. Dombrovsky. It reveals new facts and information about his biography, formation in the profession, extensive experience of practical work in different spheres, under the guidance of and in co-authorship with outstanding masters-architects in a variety of styles, in different cities and countries in 1910-920s. It reveals the emerging interest of the architect-artist to the theoretical foundations of architectural form formation, the search for his "way to a new architecture", urban planning solutions, teaching activities in the field of architectural training. One of the important pages of his life was the work in Yaroslavl on the first general plan of the historic city and the creation of the Yaroslavl State Art Workshops, which practically became the "overture" of the Sverdlovsk period of activity. New scientific information is introduced, the role of the period under consideration in the creative career of the architect is evaluated, as well as S.V. Dombrovsky's contribution to the development of Yaroslavl.
