Abstract

As part of research supporting the development of a specialized methodology for urban-lighting design, this study examines the history, role, and traditions of urban lighting in shaping the urban environment, as well as the conditions of its use and perception. The contemporary functions of urban lighting in historic areas – related to safety, environmental considerations, and aesthetic requirements – are substantiated.
The study incorporates the author’s professional experience in landscape and streetscape design within historic districts of Moscow, including the preparation of "Lighting" sections, and the results of route-based surveys of historic territories carried out with regard to lighting factors and illuminance conditions. It also includes dedicated field investigations conducted in the inner-block areas of Arbat and in Catherine Park at Suvorov Square in Moscow.
